Dunning is a well-established residential neighborhood on Chicago’s Northwest Side, bounded by Irving Park Road to the north, Pulaski Road to the east, Belmont Avenue to the south, and Narragansett Avenue to the west. The neighborhood takes its name from the Dunning facility, a historic public welfare complex whose grounds are now largely occupied by Hiawatha Park and the Galewood-Dunning industrial corridor.

Wilbur Wright College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, anchors the northeastern corner of the neighborhood and brings institutional character alongside residential streets. The housing stock is primarily bungalows and ranch homes on standard 25-foot Chicago lots, with some two-flats scattered through the neighborhood.

Hiawatha Park provides significant green space in the center of the neighborhood. Trees throughout Dunning’s residential streets include the same species mix common across the Northwest Side: silver maple on older parkways, honey locust on more recently replanted strips, linden, hackberry, and some remaining ash trees dealing with the ongoing pressure of emerald ash borer.
